The
Environmental Aftermath of Hurricane Katrina
- 9/11 Environmental Action extends its deepest sympathy to everyone who has
been harmed by Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath. We do so in the same spirit that
people all over America came to our support when a terrorist attack brought down the World
Trade Center four years ago.
-
- We deplore the federal governments failure to prepare for, and respond to, such a
fierce, but predictable storm. That failure has been particularly deadly in New Orleans,
where for years, the Bush administration has cut the funds needed to reinforce the levees.
-
- For the last four years, we have watched with our hearts in our mouths as disaster has
brought death and destruction into the lives of friends, families and strangers to us at
home and around the world.
-
- Here in New York, we have fought the Bush Administrations denial that workers and
residents have been, and are being exposed to serious health hazards resulting from the
events of 9/11. We did all we could to prevent the further undermining of safety and
health regulations that are now guiding rescue efforts in New Orleans.
-
- The federal government must immediately assume
responsibility to meet fully the needs of the survivors along the Gulf of Mexico
now, but also to implement precautionary, protective policies to ensure that they and
everyone who is involved in rescue, recovery and rebuilding are not exposed unnecessarily
to health and safety hazards while they rebuild their lives and their communities.
